Afwah Phaile Social Mein, Sach Nikle Local Mein | Round Table on Gendered Mis/Disinformation in Rural India

Year: 2025

In a time when rumours travel faster than facts, Afwah Phaile Social Mein, Sach Nikle Local Mein brought together journalists, community voices, and experts in Chitrakoot to unpack how gendered disinformation shapes women’s lives in rural India.

The roundtable featured two panels:

  1. Clicks, Voices and Community: How Gendered Disinformation Unfolds in Rural India, exploring how gossip, memes, and viral videos translate into real-world harm.

  2. Rumours, Reproduction, and Representation: Examining how gendered mis/disinformation impacts women’s safety, work, and participation in public life.

Through open discussion and lived experiences, the event created a vital space to understand how digital narratives intersect with rural realities, and how local journalism can lead the way in countering gendered disinformation.

Panel 1: Clicks, Voices and Community: How Gendered Disinformation Unfolds in Rural India

From social rumors to local truths, our roundtable discussion on Clicks, Voices, and Community: How Gendered Disinformation Unfolds in Rural India explored the real impact of dis/misinformation on rural communities and how voices at the grassroots are challenging it.

Panel 2: Rumours, Reproduction, and Representation

In rural India, conversations around reproductive health are shaped as much by rumours as by facts. Our panel highlighted how men often trust peers over doctors when it comes to vasectomy, while women bear the brunt of failed procedures and societal stigma. Though many men express willingness for sterilization, follow-through is rare, revealing the deep-rooted gender dynamics at play.
